I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, start mopping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and remove important possessions from the area. If the house water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
