I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate a main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We’ll be at your place as soon as we can to resolve the problem.

While you are waiting, clear away any important things from the area, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
