I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the problem from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, any hour of the day or night. We will be there promptly to solve the issue.

While waiting, remove any important possessions from the area, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
